Semiconductor

I was watching channel4 the other night and saw this great show called animate TV; a showcase for cutting edge animations being produced today. You should checkout their website as they have all their films available to view in their archive.

One film in particular that id recommend is Magnetic Movie a film by Semiconductor a.k.a. Ruth Jarman & Joe Gerhardt. It was made for the British Arts Council and has some of the best 3D compositing ive seen onto real footage. The film visualises some the invisible natural electric forces that NASA scientists have discovered through experiments. While the scientists narrate their theories a camera pans around their lab in Berkley; taking VLF audio recordings, they've used this data to help translate the animated visuals.

Unfortunately this web version doesn't show how lush and tactile the visuals are (when i saw them on the telly) but still worth a gander.
